I coach a group of ‘02 born girls soccer team and approached Wade in 2015 to facilitate a sports psychology program. The team was a bright and gifted group accustomed to winning and perennial successes however anxiety and doubt often led to sub-par performances at the pinnacles of competition such as Provincial Championships or bigger tournaments. Wade was recommended to me by coaching colleagues at the University of Waterloo where he had been working with several varsity programs. The team appreciated his experience in working in a high performance culture and could relate to the players and their collective and individual needs. Over the course of that season we met with Wade more or less on a monthly schedule, sometimes with an extra session here or there prior to or during heavy schedule. Wade helped the team incorporate several processes and techniques which were ultimately very helpful and saw the team post an undefeated season and go on to win the Provincial U14 Girls Championship in penalty kicks, and a Bronze medal at the Canadian National Championships.
The team has since continued their successful ways and continue regular consulting with Wade. The players enjoy meeting with him and value his calm demeanor and wit. In a recent player questionnaire administered by coaching staff, many players indicated they looked forward to working with Wade again in the upcoming season and commented some of the things they have learned through working with him have been useful in other areas of their life such as school. As the coach, I have appreciated Wade’s ease to work with. He has taken the time to get to know the team – he frequently attended our training sessions and games. I felt the fact he took the time to ‘know his audience’ and made personal connections with the athletes made a tremendous difference in the effectiveness of his work with the team, and gave him credibility with the players.
Whether you are already a champion or aspiring to be one I think sports psychology can be a powerful tool. I’d recommend to any team or individual Wade as an expert who can strengthen those on top, and help unlock potentials of those striving to enhance their performance and be better at sport and life.
