Preface:

The more I’ve learned about applied sport psychology, the more I’ve asked myself, “How can I teach this to my athletes and clients in a way that they can use the information and techniques most effectively for them personally?”

I decided to compile and design a focused manual of instructions and strategies for the general public, the sport enthusiast, and the up-and-coming athlete. The chapters are designed to deliver tools and techniques of mental training in a way that’s direct, concise, and useful.

My hope is to provide you with a general understanding of applied sport psychology, and potentially inspire you to adopt and use these techniques to positively impact your life. I truly believe these techniques have the potential to help all of us achieve our goals. As long as we keep an open mind, remain present in the moment, do our best to find the positives in every situation, and maintain a growth mindset, we are well on our way to reaching our highest potential.

Why create this book?
We all have goals and dreams. We all want to better our current situation, or if we are lucky enough to already be in a great situation, we want to maintain that for as long as possible. In a perfect world, we would be able to aspire to and achieve anything we dreamt about. Yet, as we all know too well, this is not the case. Obstacles lurk around every corner. Some we can navigate quite easily, while others knock the wind out of our sails. As the authors of this book and specialists in sports performance, we are passionate about assisting and supporting athletes, post-secondary students, and anyone who finds themselves in the performance context; as we see it, the performance context, at the largest scale, is life. We see students and clients dealing with multiple demands (such as academics, work, and family responsibilities) while simultaneously doing their best to stay positive, learn, and be productive.

In both academics and sport, the landscape can be daunting. You are constantly putting yourself out there to be judged and critiqued, not only by coaches, teachers, media, and employers, but also and more importantly by yourself. It is this internal dialogue and judgement that we think is most crucial. One of our goals is to assist you with the internal judgement and evaluation, and to help you develop a system to deal with the many obstacles that you are presented with.
